Smithtown Native Takes Epic Hike

Despite bad weather, Floyd Sanford makes 56-mile hike along Hadrian's wall in England.

Wet and windy weather couldn't stop Smithtown native Floyd Sanford from completing a 56-mile hike along an ancient Roman wall in England.

According to a story in Eastern Iowa Life, Sanford, who lives in Iowa's Cedar Rapids, spent five days hiking along Hadrian's Wall.

In five days Floyd hiked 56 miles, including 48 along the infamous Roman Empire-era wall. Luckily he had but two days of bad weather. The sun shined most of the time on this retired Coe College biology professor.

“This is an exciting planet,” says this white-haired, bearded man. “I want to see as much of it as I can.”
