The Dish: Smithtown's Octopus Treasure

Nothing fancy here: Octopus, oil, potatoes and spicy paprika. Spanish soul food.

You might not think octopus is a Smithtown delicacy, but with Espana Tapas and Wine bar in town, you might want to think again.

Small-plate goodness is the norm at this small eatery in St. James near the corner of Route 25 and Lake Avenue, though its house special Octopus Galician Style is a real treat.

A testament to how clean, simple flavors can delight, the dish features delicate boiled octopus dusted with hot paprika and served drizzled in olive oil on top of a bed of boiled potatoes.

The $10.95 dish is served with a few hearty slices of warm bread.

Espana is a relative newcomer to the area, open only 6 months. We'll be featuring a chat with the owner in the next few weeks.

Food and wine may be the restaurant's livelihood, but it also serves up some Spanish entertainment. On Thursday night, for example, Espana will feature a Flamenco guitarist starting at 8:30 p.m. It's a monthly show.

Have you visited Espana yet? What did you have?
