Nesconset residents are rallying on the Internet in hopes of prevent a proposal to build 66 garden apartments off Lake Avenue. 

Nearly 600 signatures have been gathered via a Change.org petition asking Town of Smithtown officials to deny a change of zoning request by developers Story Book Homes Inc. in Nesconset. The proposed plans call for 66 garden apartments between Pierson Street and Heritage Place South off Lake Avenue.

As Nesconset resident , the race walker has set her focus on enjoying a dream that been more than 12 years in the making.

Kyle Keenan, a former Smithtown High School West lacrosse standout, put in a goal and had an assist Saturday in the 10-8 victory for the U.S. U19 team over Canada in Finland for the gold in the Federation of International Lacrosse U19 World Championships.

Droves of Tattoo aficionados on Long Island will soon descend on Nassau Coliseum for United Ink, the region's only tattoo convention.

"Long Island has many great, talented artists and we need a place to all get together and unite, to tattoo in one place together," said Lou Rubino, owner of the tattoo shop chain and event creator. "That’s why I planned this United Ink, to bring the art of tattooing to a whole new level on Long Island."

After a fire broke out above Pick of the Litter grooming and puppy shop Monday morning, 70 dogs and cats were safely rescued from the building by local fire rescue units, though five were found dead on the second floor, according to officials.

According to Smithtown Second Assistant Chief Tim Murphy, the cause of the fire - which broke out in the rear of the second floor - is still under investigation.
