Week in Review: Controversy at School Meeting, Blighted Property Progress

This week Patch introduced two Islanders' Ice Girls, the results from the library budget vote and more.

The Smithtown Central School District made the top news spot this week when when former board member Neil Carlin accused the district of withholding information regarding the $3.1 million state building aid gaffe.

Carlin claimed he was denied a Sept. 28 Freedom of Information Law request for documents related to an independent investigation of the state aid snafu by accounting firm Nawrocki Smith LLP.

School district attorney Eugene Barnosky said Carlin’s request was not denied but stalled, citing the need to review the documents for sensitive information that may need to be redacted.

“It’s a work in progress,” said town councilman Bob Creighton of the initiative, which he spearheaded with councilmen Ed Wehrheim and Kevin Malloy. “We have had some results, but not nearly as much as we want.”

, and according to Regional Director of State Parks Ron Foley, the area will have a deeper channel and be will be more usable at high and low tide, which will allow for better navigation in the south marina area.

Finally, 960 votes to 617, and two trustees were selected to the Board of Trustees – incumbent Anthony Monteleone and newcomer Otis Thornhill.
