Week in Review: Missing Fisherman Found at Caleb Smith

Smithtown has its share of bars and pubs, and three weeks ago the town welcomed another one to the scene – Croxley's Ale House & Biergarten. The bar took over the .

While Croxley's will provide competition for the other local long-standing bars and pubs, owners and managers of these establishments feel that it will help, not hurt their business.

"It's always good to have people in town, it makes Smithtown a destination," said Brendan Dunfin, manager at  on Main Street. "When people are in town they tend to bounce around, so it's good for everyone."

While construction continues at the soon-to-be home of LA Fitness on Smithtown's Main Street, the gym has opened a preview center on Route 111 in the same shopping center as .

The preview center, located at 81 Route 111, opened Aug. 24 and will close when the gym opens.

On Main Street and side roads off the roadway you'll find plenty of restaurants with numerous international cuisines to choose from, but on Aug. 31 a new business unique to the area was introduced – Fresh Catch Market & Grill, a fish market with dine-in and take-out options.

While many aspects of the business keep  open, co-owner Claudia LaGrega said the longevity of the restaurant could be attributed to two things – being hands on and regulars.

LaGrega, who started working at the restaurant 25 years ago and purchased it 17 years ago with partner and head chef Tommy Marzano, said her day-to-day operations aren’t typical of a business owner.

While originally set for a mid August opening, the sign at the soon-to-be Kelli's Grille in Nesconset has just made its way to the building's facade. A message on the eatery's Facebook page said it should be open by mid September.

A construction worker at the scene back in said the expected opening date was within 30 days. The store has not yet opened, but signs for hours of operation and specials adorning the windows are indicating the opening date is not far away.

New York State Park Police have found Dr. Jerome Nadler, 76, of Setauket, a fisherman who went missing on Labor Day at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve.

According to Park Police Sgt. Daniel Lammers, Nadler was found Thursday as a result of the continuing search and brought to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation.

Suffolk County Police responded to a single-car accident late Wednesday night on Townline Road in Hauppauge.

According to police, officers responded to call that came in at 11:43 p.m. of an overturned car on Townline Road. The car, a 1995 Honda SUV, was overturned on Townline Road near Gaymore Road.

Police said the driver was not taken to a nearby hospital and there were no major injuries to report.

Opinions on the change in routines for Smithtown Central School District parents and students due to the closing of Nesconset Elementary seem to have changed now that school back in session. 

While Superintendent Anthony Annunziato was not in the district when the decision was made by the Board of Education to close the school, he said the transition for students and faculty has been smooth.

Following the exposure of an  where cardboard and paper were exchanged for under-the-counter cash payments, the Town of Smithtown is seeking to terminate its contract with Jody Enterprises and press charges against the company.

The town is also set to take legal action against its surety, Platte River Insurance Company.
