Photos: Duo Runs for 12 Hours for Charity at Energy Fitness

St. James resident Dan Turturro and Stony Brook resident Byron Lane attempted to run 125 miles on the treadmills at Energy Fitness in St. James on Saturday to raise money for the Port Jefferson based charity Friends of Karen.

They beat the 125 mile goal and ran for 127.55 miles.

Construction is underway at Sivana Salon, with the hopes to have its new addition ready to cater to its expanding clientele by mid February.

Owner Steven Melito, who owns not only the salon but also the building where its located, said Sivana’s neighbor St. James Natural Food was looking to downsize roughly one year ago, prompting him to take the third store in the strip.

Six people, including a Town of Brookhaven employee, were busted Thursday for their participation in an alleged cocaine and Oxycodone ring and face serious penalties, including life in prison.

A joint investigation by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department began in January 2012, but law enforcement only began using wiretaps three months ago, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota. Although wiretaps were used since September, Spota said the ring has been going on “probably a number of years,” and has been in operation since at least 2010.

While barber shops are dime-a-dozen on Long Island, it's a pretty safe bet that you won't find one as unique and diverse as Two Kings Barber Shop & Shave Parlor, located at 863-4 Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown. What other barber shop could you walk in and be greeted by a pet snake, Elvis Presley memorabilia and a jukebox? How about leave the shop with contemporary hairstyle like a fade or a taper, or a retro or vintage look like a pompadour?

Meet Joe Rubino, owner of Two Kings and a master barber. Rubino sat with Patch and spoke about his roles as an owner, what its like to own a business in Smithtown, how you'll feel leaving his shop and more.

Miller's Ale House is under construction in Lake Grove at the former site of Houlihan's, which was recently knocked down to make room for the popular bar and grill chain.

The news comes after locals suggested the site as a better alternative to Sonic Restaurant's proposal to open in Nesconset, a plan that was rejected by the Town of Smithtown.

Superintendent for RPC General Contractors Bob Grant confirmed the ale house will take over the former Houlihan's location Wednesday afternoon. Grant said the construction began back in November and while the building has been demolished he said work should be completed on the new building by mid-April.

Local Verizon Wireless customers won't have travel to Lake Grove after Wednesday, when a Verizon Premium Retail store opens on main street in Smithtown. Manager of the store Adam DeSantis said doors will be open at its 74 East Main Street location by 3 p.m.
