Week in Review: New Deli Comes to Main Street

Matthew Morton set to take his seat on the Smithtown's Board of Education in July, a seat he won uncontested back in May.

With current board member , the seat belonged to Morton, a St. James resident. He admitted he was surprised no one else decided to run for the vacant seat and relishes the opportunity to make a difference.

"I've lived in the town pretty much my whole life, my kids have been in the school district for a couple years now, and I just want to be involved and have somewhat of a say or an opinion or a vote as to the direction things are going to go in," he said.

The doors at the former home to  have been closed for some time now but by mid August there will be a new deli for people to shop at – Nino's Delicatessen.

"It's not like every other deli, it's different. It's more like a Manhattan-style deli," said owner Anthony Garofalo. "[It's] an upscale deli, the food is going to be good. I haven't been to a deli on Long Island that's going to be like mine."

Deli customers could expect to see European style refrigerators and some seating when entering Nino's, and have their food prepared by a chef with 25 years of experience.

A stop work order has been issued by the Town of Smithtown at the former home of  on West Main Street, the soon-to-be home of Nino's Delicatessen.

The stop work order, according to deli owner Anthony Garofalo, is only for work done on the building's exterior because of a variance needed to install a window.

An iPhone application specific to the Smithtown Central School District dedicated to providing current information to students, parents and locals was introduced at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting.

Digital Natives, the company behind making the application possible, features three graduates of the district.

"Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Melissa Gorga made a stop in Smithtown on Friday as part of her promotional tour indroducing Voli Light Vodka to locals. While Gorga arrived at The Wine Guy nearly two hours after schedule due to rush hour traffic, hundreds of fans stuck around to meet the reality television star, took photos with her and left with autographs.
