Week in Review: School Board Incumbents Run Unopposed, Funds Secured for Local Firehouse

A look back at the week in news in Smithtown.

Smithtown Superintendent Creates New Administrative Position
Smithtown Superintendent Anthony Annunziato created a new administrative staff position on Tuesday night, promising its the first of many reorganizational changes to come. 

Smithtown Board of Education approved the addition of a new assistant superintendent of pupil and personnel services to the district's central administrative team at Tuesday's board meeting. Deborah Vertovez was appointed at interim assistant superintendent starting May 6. 

Smithtown School Board of Ed. Members Run Unopposed
Two Smithtown Board of Education members will be running unopposed for re-election this May despite public dismay at the proposed $224 million budget for 2013-14 school year. 

Board Vice President Theresa Knox is seeking her fifth term representing the taxpayers of Smithtown Central School District. Board trustee Louis Liguori, first elected in 2006, will be seeking his third term on the board. Board of Education members serve three-year terms. 

Smithtown Fire Department Lands $84K Grant
The Smithtown Fire Department will receive $84,825 from a federal fire grant to be used to set up a system to remove lingering and dangerous diesel fumes in its local firehouse.

The grant, secured by U.S. Reps. Tim Bishop and Steve Israel and Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, falls under the federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which allows fire companies to apply for money that can be used for firefighter training, protective equipment, wellness, fitness, and upgrades to fire stations.

Smithtown Soccer Standout Chosen for Elite Training Camp
Alicia D'Aoust, 13,  of Smithotwn is one of 48 girls selected nationwide, to work with the U.S. Soccer coaching staff for eight days in May at the University of Portland. She will join the U-14 Girls National Team Camp.

Democrat Smithtown Sup Candidate Shares His Vision for Town
Nesconset resident Steven Snair announced last week he will be running as the Democratic candidate for Town of Smithtown supervisor in November. A political newcomer, Snair faces stiff competition in his first campaign for office from incumbent Republican Supervisor Patrick Vecchio and his challenger Robert Creighton. 
 
Snair, 31, is a Kings Park native who graduated from Kings Park High School in 1999. He went on to study at LIU Post before receiving his law degree from Widener University. Since then, Snair opened his own practice of Smithtown Main Street focusing on foreclosure, landlord-tenant disputes and other matters.
