Week in Review: School Budget Proposes Cuts to Teachers, Staff

Smithtown School District Superintendent Edward Ehmann unveiled the proposed 2012-2013 budget Wednesday night, a $215.8 million spending measure which would lay off roughly 45 faculty and staff members and increase 1.63 percent over the current budget. 

A memorial is set up outside the  doctor's office on Lake Avenue for the late Katie Farrell, . The office will add to the memorial Thursday by raising a banner for her son Tyler, asking for him to remain with his family in St. James.

Suffolk County Police said two people were injured in a car accident that shut Route 25A in St. James Tuesday. According to a spokeswoman, the driver of one of the cars involved had dropped a thermos and veered into incoming traffic when they reached for it, causing the head-on collision.

Smithtown's Main Street will soon have one less vacancy as Central Insurance Agency will take over the former home to Rogers Tuxedos. The agency is set to move to its new 93 East Main Street location on May 1, according to George Gavaris, president of Central.

Suffolk County Police said a newspaper delivery man found a man who was unconscious and suffering from hypothermia Tuesday. The newspaper delivery man told police he discovered the man, who was only wearing pajamas, at the bottom of an embankment off Bishops Road at around 4:30 a.m.

While the changed awning in the Colonial Commons shopping center indicates  is coming soon, the restaurant's move from Smithtown to St. James has been delayed until April. Owner Sam Mancini said because of delays in receiving equipment the eatery would be open in three or four weeks.  that he hoped to open at  by the end of March, closing his location at 60 Terry Road. 

Patrons anxious to visit the Smithtown and Kings Park branches of the Smithtown Special Library District will have to wait a little bit longer. Electrical delays, including a LIPA power hook up, have pushed back the re-opening dates for the Kings Park and Smithtown branches from mid-April to late spring.

Dn't worry, the district will bully and scare the parents into voting yes by threatening programs instead of doing what they need to do which is reduce administrative costs.

We can all make a statement one way or another when we vote. However, that statement should be madeRead More on a state level not the local level. Boards of Ed are powerless to do any real cost cutting. The state needs to take this on. We need real reform in Albany to reduce the ever increasing pensions and life long benefits that educators enjoy. Combine this with letting Albany decide salary increases for all educators and we can guaranty tax reductions over the next few years. Its that simple, Boards cannot do these. Lets get Albany to move on these NOW!
