Long Island Beekeeping Club Presents Kim Eierman on "Gardening for Bees"

Ever wonder what you can do to make sure that the bees in your neighborhood keep buzzing and pollinating the plants we depend on? On Sunday, February 23 at 2 p.m., environmental horticulturalist Kim Eierman will speak to a meeting of the Long Island Beekeeping Club on Gardening for Bees at Frank Brush Barn, Smithtown Historical Society, 239 Middle County Road (Route 25) in Smithtown. The event is open to the public free of charge.

Ms. Eierman is eager to raise awareness of the "bee forage deficit" and teach beekeepers and gardeners how to garden in ways designed to keep honey bees healthy and productive. She is the founder of EcoBeneficial!, a horticulture consulting and communications company based in Bronxville, New York.

"Whether you have a small plot, a community garden or a suburban backyard, you can grow an appropriate selection of plants, timed to flower throughout the growing season to nourish honey bees," says Eierman. "Gardening to support honey bees provides better bee nutrition, resulting in healthier bees that produce safer, healthier honey and plants for all of us to eat."

Eierman notes that even if you don't keep bees, you can still support your neighborhood honey bee colonies, as well as native bees, by using her "Feed the Bees!" gardening techniques.
