THE ANTIGONE PROJECT

Get ready for a unique live theatre experience, The Antigone Project, directed by Jeanette Yew. The production is an adaptation inspired by many versions of Sophocles’ Antigone. This version will include writings and original choreography generated by the cast.

It will be performed by the Department of Theatre Arts at Stony Brook University, Theatre Two, Staller Center.

The central figure of this tragedy, Antigone, the niece of the King

(Creon) believes in the rights of the dead over the laws dictated by her uncle. She faces trial after she admits burying her brother, a flagrant violation of the King’s command. Creon puts her on trial, but before she is “brought to justice” is found dead by her own hands. This starts a chain reaction of deaths and suicides of those close to the King, leaving him desperately alone.

The production uses a modern day setting and includes a variety of performance styles. The goal lifts out the numerous themes from the original text and applies them to present day. Yew hopes to raise provocative questions such as “What would you die for” and “Who is a good leader”; just two of the varied themes that emerge during the course of the play.
