Is Your Car Ready for Summer?

Although winter is known to be the most high-maintenance season when it comes to driving and car care on Long Island, your car does need TLC when entering the summer months.  Treat your car to a check-up before the summer months of road trips and beach days!

1. Check your air-conditioning and coolant levels. Run your AC and check the vents for any vapor emissions. If you can see vapor, your coolant is low.

2. Change your windshield wipers. They should be replaced every spring and fall to anticipate rougher weather. Be prepared for a summer downpour!

3. Wash your car! Keep the exterior clear of pollen, bird droppings and bugs to protect your paint and keep your car looking its best!

4. Measure your tire pressure. The warmer it is the more your tire pressure is apt to change. Check your owner’s manual for your vehicles’ correct tire pressure.

5. Clean the undercarriage of your car to get rid of any salt build-up that can eat away at the metal. Salt build-up will also make your engine and transmission run hotter since it is obstructing heat from escaping through the bottom of the car.

6. Check your belts and hoses. These help to keep the engine cool. Check for loose connections, cracks, and leaks and make sure hoses are firm.

7. Change your air filter. After a long winter your air filter can get clogged with salt, sand, and other debris. A fresh air filter can also improve your gas mileage by as much as 10%.

8. Clean your battery. Heat speeds up the chemical reaction inside the battery causing it to overcharge, and drastically shortening its lifespan. Keep it running smoothly by detaching cables and wiping off the terminals.

Make sure you and your car are prepared to enjoy the summer months safely and efficiently. Remember to always keep up with regularly scheduled maintenance in addition to seasonal updates! For more auto resources, visit GrooveCar.com
