Rules of the Road Being Neglected

Have you noticed some questionable behaviors on the road lately? Many drivers seem to have forgotten some of the most basic rules from the DMV handbooks we so eagerly studied in our pre-driving years. Here is a quick reminder of just how to behave on the roads!

Tailgating.  The “three-second rule” still applies! When the car in front of you passes a landmark, count “one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two, one-thousand-three” and if you pass that object before you finish counting, you are following too close!

Merging. Always signal and be sure you have enough room to enter safely. Enter at or close to the speed of traffic and do not stop unless absolutely necessary! Traffic already on the highway has the right of way, however, drivers should not refuse to make room for incoming traffic.

Yielding. A yield is not the same as a merge! While merging requires you to enter oncoming traffic without stopping, yielding requires you to let traffic pass and then proceed when it is clear.

Full Stops. Police officers don’t watch the car or the driver, but rather focus on your tires. If they do not stop rolling at a stop sign or before you make a right on red, a ticket is coming your way!

Visibility. Before changing lanes or merging, you must put on your directional (of course), check your mirrors, but also turn your head to check for traffic!
