As the trend for businesses to use social media has grown tremendously, and continues to daily, you might find yourself wondering, 'Which social media site should I be using for my business?'

It is no wonder if businesses should use social media, but rather which outlets are the best for your specific industry. My company holds monthly networking events and we get a lot of different responses when we discuss social media. Some professionals say LinkedIn is best, some prefer Facebook, and others like Twitter. I noticed that age and industry play a huge part in which site these professionals praise. But, really, it isn't about which outlet you prefer to use, but rather, which outlet your consumers are using.

It's extremely important to be aware of your target audience, and which social media sites they are using. Some businesses will benefit being on all sites, some might benefit from only one. Be strategic! And be personable. Many businesses are focused on making a sale and feeding their social media followers sales pitches. But, you are missing out on the opportunity to create a genuine relationship with your customers.

Remember, social media is exactly that...social. Social networks were created for people to connect through the internet, so don't attack your 'friends' and 'followers' with your sales jargon. Give useful information, share tips, ask questions, tell a joke, post a picture or video. Make a connection.
