JWG's Done and Not Begun May 20, 2011

Wherein JWG recalls the life, and mind, of a broken man.

Dad Meyer’s spiralling down into a dark abyss is gaining momentum. No words spoken to him reach his senses. In fact, it seems his senses have left him. He hears tales that have never been told. It is appalling to hear false statements from his lips. He cares for nothing — including people around him. His caterwauling is not easy to stomach. One tries sympathy. One tries suggestions. One tries truth. All fall on an empty, pitiable shell of a man. He refuses to help himself. He refuses the help of professionals trained in caring for the sick in body and mind. He is, and we are, told that if he chooses, his quality of life can be greatly restored. He does not listen. He does not care. His constant crying of crocodile tears evokes nothing from those he wishes to impress. He has wrung the last bit of emotional caring from many of us. His actions are beyond pity. Even his small grandsons have to get away from his dramatic displays. Is he himself? No. The person who is in the next room is a stranger that requires help. This next week, perhaps, day, will be decisive. Decisions — strong decisions — will have to be made. The care he needs we cannot provide. Needless to say, Dad Meyer’s condition is affecting all who see him. We must be sure to take care of ourselves. At times, this, too, is a struggle. I doubt that Dad Meyer will ever know the problems he has created. I doubt, tonight, he will truly get well. His heart is sore. His loss is real. The heaviness he carries would burden, and stop, Jacob Marley. George Meyer, I fear, has approached a sad, horrendous finality. Yet, miracles do happen. Happy Endings can occur.

This past week’s Full Strawberry Moon was hidden. Its gravitational powers were felt more strongly than usual. As this moon’s light wanes, at Zwerglipatch Cottage in Hauppauge, so does the life, and mind, of a broken man.
