JWG's Grand Hodgepodge — Solid Rock & Possibly (2 poems)

Wherein JWG asks a question we all have: "Have I become a grown-up?"

49. Solid Rock

Solid rock
Is more preferable than shifting sand
When one is confused.

Looking at Mountains
Which have not changed appearance for eons
Is encouraging to us.

We don’t think of tectonics.
This powerful force can move what we see.
Heavy rocks become an avalanche.

Never take anything for granted.

We are living in one of Earth’s seasons.
The Beginning? Middle? Or End? We don’t know.

Rocks do not float in the winds.
Sand blows across Continents and Oceans.
We have lost much in these storms of “dust”.

The Ocean’s beaches
Have been hewn from rock and covered in sand.
Walk on a Beach with wonder.

Sand is Rock
Which has been worn by the force of Water.
Will the Oceans shift?

50. Possibly

Possibly,
I will never think about what could be.
It is disturbing.

The disturbances
I imagine are from an active mind
That dwells on the dramatic.

Comedy is difficult.
It is easier to make myself cry.
Changing emotional gears is tough.

Is it due to my experience
When I used to dread facing each new day
That I have learned to not dwell on the future?

My tomorrows are brighter.
My thoughts are lighter and my spirit soars.
I’ve extinguished despair from my head.

Living, not thinking,
Is the best advice I’ve given myself.
Have I become a grown-up?

Finally,
I’m on the path of Happiness and Peace.
Perpetual bliss.

[JWG will be away for the next two weeks. He will be back beginning with entries from his JWG’s Experimental Eccentric as well as more poetry from JWG’s Grand Hodgepodge and continuing his JWG’s Necessity. Until then, happy end of Summer.]

How, in a period of rapidly declining enrollment, can costs be increasing so much from year to year,Read More you ask? The answer is in front of you in black and white. I urge you to READ your district’s budget: we are funding retirements when many of us cannot afford to fund our own during difficult economic times. These wheels were set in motion by contracts negotiated in times of unrealistic growth that may likely not occur again. It is time to open up these plans and relieve this unfair burden from our shoulders. Whatever other measures are pursued in order to control costs, including consolidation within and eventually with other districts, are never going to be enough if you cannot get this problem corrected. Write your congressman, for the love of God. If you need any more incentive to do so, please go to http://rocdocs.democratandchronicle.com/database/teacher-pensions-new-york and look at what Smithtown’s retirees are collecting MONTHLY. It will sicken you.

Tomorrow is the vote..vote NO NOW or our taxes are going to continue to sky rocket. Unless we doRead More something this town will continue to spiral down. More taxes aren't going to help. We need to cut expenses and get ourselves on a fiscally responsible plan.
