René and I have been married for a bit over ten months. At this time last year, we did not know if we would have the chance to officially exchange vows publicly in New York State. We were nervously excited. We watched, and read, with bated breath the proceedings leading up to the acceptance by this State’s government.
Time, as ever, has flown. Our despair, in one way, seems quaint. However, our fear of acceptance is just as strong. This year, we have heard many who support us. We have heard much vehemence, too. I wish I could shut down all of the bad news.
This Pride Month is, as ever, an important month to be Out and Proud. We are looking forward to participating in our first Long Island Pride March and Fest. Truthfully, I don’t know what to expect. Last year, we were present at Albuquerque’s Pride Day. People, no matter where they are, are capable of Happiness. This past year, with all of its pains, for us, has been a happy year. We can’t let it stop.

Barriers to living openly, and freely, are falling. More Members’ wishes about marriage equality (Cabinet Members of President Obama) have taken a stance for this freedom. Even the Boy Scouts are “considering” accepting gay men and women. A woman, recently, was asked not to be a “den mother” for the simple fact that she is “gay”. This hurt was brought into the open. If we, as Citizens, do not make our voices heard, there is nothing to which we can listen. However, making those who wish to keep us mum listen to our plight has been a big, big problem in the past. The present with its internet and instant news helps and hinders. False news has always travelled through the ages. My attempt to bring our Truth into the light by my sharing is just beginning. I do not know if what I have said will help. Some of my Friends are enthusiastic and have always supported René and me. Their kind words to their own Friends does not hurt our campaign to let our happy freedom known.
