Alivia's Story

Your Life Can Change In One Tragic Moment...Alivia's Story

August 2009, Alivia and three friends were being driven to a local fast
food restaurant by the father of two of the girls. In a split second their lives
were changed dramatically as an approaching car lost control and crashed into
the car the girls were riding in. Unfortunately the father was killed instantly

and all four of the girls were injured. Eventually the girls recovered from
their physical injuries except for Alivia. Her spine was severely crushed and
she is now paralyzed from the chest down. She faces the prospect of spending the
rest of her life in a wheelchair and needing someone to care for her needs 24
hours a day.

Alivia is an honor student at Kings Park High School. Pryor to this
terrible accident she was an extremely active young lady who excelled in
competitive dance. I don't know how anyone can make the adjustment she has made
but she remains full of hope and somehow manages to keep hers and those around
her spirits high.

Alivia lives in a rented home with her mother Laura. As it is only the two
of them Laura has had to leave her job to be Alivia's full time caregiver. What
funding they receive hardly covers expenses and the old van Laura uses to
transport Alivia to doctors and physical therapy is not going to last much
longer.

The "Hope For Alivia Trust" is a fund that has been established for the
purpose of helping this brave and courageous young lady to get the help she so
desperately needs.

I had the pleasure of meeting Alivia's mom as the Smithtown Children's Foundation assisted them with some bills a while back. I hope there is a huge turnout for this courageous young lady and her mom, who is her sole caregiver! This family needs our help. They reall need a handi-capable van so that Alivia can get around.

You are absolutely right pj. Its comparing apples to oranges. Assisted living is for the elderlyRead More that cant take care of themselves. What noise is created. They are indoors and at the age where driving may not be an option. And the facility faces Route 25A. A main corridor that has been used as a main road for over 50 years. A road that has gas stations, bars, hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and high schools presently on it. Why not an assisted living.

Exactly. Don't see a problem having it. Many of them don't even go outdoors.

We have an assisted living center right next to our neighborhood. For the most part it is quiet,Read More there is not a lot more traffic, it even looks nice. I will take it over another strip mall, supermarket, bar any day . Like the previous poster wrote, it serves our community.
