In 2013, Smithtown saw a number of fires break out that ravaged county parkland closing down local highways and hitting family homes. 

Here's a look back at 5 of the biggest fires to break out in Smithtown in 2013: 

Brush Fire Burns More Than 3 Acres off Vets Highway
A large brush fire burned more than 3 acres of town and county parks off Veterans Memorial Highway in November. 

"This is a very large brush fire, it’s larger than most around here," said  Michael Landrigan, second assistant chief of Smithtown Fire Department.

Morning Brush Fire Jams Vets Highway Traffic
Traffic was jammed early on Nov. 4 after a brush fire at Blydenburgh Park closed lanes on Veteran's Highway.

Lightning struck the roof of a St. James house on Friday causing a fire in the top floor of the house. Bill Theobalt, chief of the St. James fire department, said a neighbor placed an emergency call after she heard a loud bang and saw smoke at the house next door.
