7-Eleven Busted in Underage Alcohol Sales Sting

Four of six stores in Smithtown and Commack fail inspection, tickets issued.

An employee at the 7-Eleven on Edgewood Avenue in Smithtown was issued a ticket on charges of selling alcohol to a minor during a six-store inspection Friday, according to police.

Police said Jatinder Kumar, 34, employed by 7-Eleven, was issued the ticket after a volunteer for the police who is not 21-years-old was sent into the store, located at 7 Edgewood Avenue, with the intent to purchase alcohol on Friday. The 7-Eleven was one of four stores in Smithtown and Commack to fail the inspection.

According to police, community complaints resulted in inspections for some of the six stores, the other stores were randomly selected.

The violation is a first-degree offense of unlawfully dealing with a child.

Kumar, 34, will have to appear at a future date at the first district court in Central Islip, police said.
