Update: Man Killed in Two-Car Collision on Vets Highway

Two-car crash into a utility pole at the corner of Spartan Lane closes westbound Vets Highway for hours.

Update 12:30 a.m.:  

Suffolk County police said Michael Santor, 85, was killed in a two-car crash at the intersection of Veterans Highway and Spartan Lane on Friday evening.

Santor was driving a1994 Infiniti eastbound on Veterans Highway when he attempted to make a left onto Spartan Lane, according to police. Santor hit C.B. Varluck, 65, who was driving his 2006 Chevy westbound on Veterans Highway at approximately 6:10 p.m. The collision sent Varluck veering into a metal light pole. 

Both Santor and Varluck were transported to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. Varluck has non-life-threatening injuries to his head and chest. 

Police impounded both vehicles for safety checks as they investigate the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

A two-car crash at the corner of Veterans Highway and Spartan Lane has closed the main Hauppauge artery for hours Friday evening. 

Suffolk County police were called to the scene a two-car crash in front of the Dunkin Donuts on Veterans Highway at approximately 6:40 p.m. A black four-door sedan involved in the accident hit into a metal utility pole on the corner of Spartan lane, while a silver sedan was left the middle of the interesection.

The crash has closed down westbound Veterans Highway from Motor Parkway north to Spartan Lane for more than two hours Friday night. Units were still on the scene as of 8:15 p.m. 

Police said the driver of at least one vehicle sustained very serious injuries, but would not release any further information.

Not sure if that's s town light, if so you would call the traffic dept. Not highway.

When the green arrow is on, the opposite traffic is stopped. But when it is just green light (round light, not arrow) traffic is still coming north and one must make sure turn can safely be made with no cars coming at you before making left turn - same as a normal intersection. Prayers for both drivers involved in this tragic accident.

You need to yield. When making a left same as always 90 percent of the time poor judgment and people rushing is the reason! You do not have the rite of way when making a left you are responsible if there is a collision

This is my uncle Mickey...God only knows I will miss him.. We talked on the phone about a week before this happened..He was the best I have ever known .. Now he is gone for the moment.. But we will see each other again..He is with my mom and nanny and my Uncle SONNY...I loved them all very dearly...flip
