Firefighters Battle Basement Blaze

Damage from the basement fire extended to other areas of the home at 148 Blydenburgh Avenue.

Smithtown firefighters responded to an early morning house fire Saturday at 148 Blydenburgh Avenue.

One resident of the home was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center to be treated for possible smoke inhalation.

According to the Smithtown Fire Department, firefighters responded to a call at 4:57 a.m. when residents of the home notified the department of smoke and flames in the basement. Although the fire occurred in the basement, areas of the home aside from the basement were significantly damaged.

Firefighters conducted a search of the home for additional residents, which all had evacuated upon reporting the fire, and met low visibility, heavy fire and high temperatures as they fought the fire. The firefighters removed windows and cut a hole in the main bedroom floor to remove smoke.

The St. James, Hauppauge, Nesconset and Nissequogue fire departments, provided additional support.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
