A Nesconset man is in critical condition following a three-car crash on Saturday in Yaphank that took the life of a Medford woman

According to police, Kaitlyn Dougherty, 22, of Medford, died riding as a passenger in a 2008 Nissan driven by Christopher Torres, 23 of Nesconset. Police say Torres was driving westbound on Horseblock Road near Yaphank Avenue in Yaphank when he lost control of his vehicle around 7:28 p.m.

The Nissan crossed into the eastbound lane striking two eastbound vehicles, a 2003 Ford van driven by William Paravella, 31 of Mastic, and a 2003 Volkswagen driven by Daniel Dittmar, 31 of Center Moriches,  said police.

Dougherty was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, said police.

Torres was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital via Suffolk County Police helicopter, where he is listed in critical condition, according to police. All other drivers and the passenger in the Volkswagen, Stephen Zanca, 35 of Yaphank, were transported by ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue for non-life threatening injuries.

This incident is under investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Fifth Squad detectives at 631-854-8552.
