Nesconset Man Sentenced For Failing to Pay $114K in Taxes

Richard Edelson, 44, to serve three years probation.

A Nesconset man was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to pay the state $203,275 in in restitution for failing to pay personal income taxes for several years.

According to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, Richard Edelson, 44, did not pay income taxes from 2004-2008. Edelson, a forensic accountant, was convicted of failure to file a return or report, a misdemeanor.

The case was investigated by the Tax Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and prosecuted by the Office of the Suffolk County District Attorney.

“I commend District Attorney Thomas J. Spota and his team for their continued focus on enforcing our state’s tax laws and pursuing the prosecution of this case,” said State Department of Taxation and Finance Commissioner Thomas Mattox.  “The defendant worked in the financial industry, and certainly knew failing to pay income taxes would eventually catch up with him.”
