Driver was turning into church parking lot on South Oyster Bay Road.

A 88-year-old woman walking near Our Lady of Mercy Church on South Oyster Bay Road was struck by a car and later died, Nassau Detectives said Saturday.

Rose Tantillo, 88, of Melville was walking in the church parking lot off South Oyster Bay Road when she was struck down by a car. The vehicle had turned into the Roman Catholic church's parking lot. The incident took place Friday at 4:40 p.m.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, detectives said.

The driver of the car, a 2002 Subaru, was identified only as a 70-year-old woman. The driver, who was not injured, has not been charged. The car has been impounded for routine safety checks.

It's still light out at 4:40PM - The woman who was struck was not invisible - was the driver too busy with her cell phone to notice her ?? This is VERY strange - the driver was 70, not 90 and didn't see the woman walking in front of her ??

I am a member of the Church who knew the victim. It was an unfortunate accident. And Jeff, she wasnt on her cell phone, dont assume. Both the victim and driver were outstanding parishioners of our Church. Pray for both!!
