It may not be the kid's fault but the bottom line with these kids in STJ, is 95% drive way to fast to react to anything. Call me crazy but when you drive around STJ there is no reason to even drive the speed limit. I have two kids which drive and when Im with them I cant say slow down enough times to them. This comes from someone who has lived in STJ for 45 years. Everyone should just slow down.

Yes very well stated CMARIE. Right on.
JustSayin' August 22, 2012 at 01:50 PM
I think we can all agree that EVERYONE should slow down, teenagers and adults alike...I have seen more adults tear down these streets barely rolling through stop signs than teenagers. In this case, I still believe it was darkness & glaring headlights which made it difficult to see a pedestrian walking practically in the shrubbery and overhanging trees. Again, very unfortunate.
William1979STJ August 22, 2012 at 02:18 PM
yes but not to keep saying the same thing over and over again if you are driving at a responsible speed you can react properly. I have a problem with people just saying its not my fault ! This country is full of people who say its not my fault, is that what you say to his family. Sorry this hits to close to home. And your right everyone should slow down.

I believe the driver was coming around the corner off Railroad and turning onto First. Which would leave him surprised if someone was walking right there. It was an accident and maybe no one should pass judgement on anyone, it is a tragedy for all involved. And yes, I do completely agree everyone needs to slow down in St. James.

i lived in St James but now live in Smithtown,I know exactly where this is. This 18 year old should have is license pulled. Also,he was probably driving way to fast and to close trying to screw around with the poor man to scare him and misjudged the distance.I would put this before a Grand Jury to decide if he should be charged.
THERESA August 23, 2012 at 12:31 AM
I HATE DRIVING DOWN THAT ROAD, TOO DAMN NARROW! LIGHTS ARE VERY DIM..
Voicingmyopinion August 23, 2012 at 01:16 AM
Wow Ironmanjf, you are amazing! You managed to perform a complete accident investigation, accuse him of reckless driving and put him before a grand jury all from the comfort of your keyboard. With brains like that, you're wasting your time posting replies here on the patch, you should run for president. So he was "probably driving to (sic) fast" (I thought it was too fast, silly me) and to (sic) close (oops, there it is again, I thought was too close). Check your facts, find out all of the information before running your obviously uneducated mouth. Oh and one more thing, brush up on your geography, Saint James is part of Smithtown, so if you lived in Saint James, you ALWAYS lived in Smithtown. I'm not saying he didn't do any of the things you mentioned, because I wasn't there, but neither were you so hold your judgment. Last I checked a person is innocent until proven guilty.....

That's quite an accusation IronmanJF!!

Some people never cease to amaze me with their ignorance. (Ironman) Let's leave the investigating up to the professionals.

Wow, Ironman that was all pretty harsh & rushing to judgment!! I do not know the intricate details of this accident & I presume you don't either. I feel terrible for everyone involved & my thoughts and prayers are with the victim as well as the young driver and his family!!!!

Damn, I'm sure glad you moved from St James. You are an absolute JERK. Smithtown is NOT far enough away....... based upon your inability to spell and puncuate I'll conclude that you have an IQ of a rock. I'm also willing to bet that I killed more brain cells having a glass of wine tonight then you have left.

The pedestrian walkways, and warning signs ("state law: stop for pedestrians in crosswalks) are a good start but the "norm" around here is to fly down Lake Avenue. Drivers need to be ticketed, and word will spread. Police need to ENFORCE the law, and things will change. Visit Port Jeff or Stony Brook or Northport (all have same pedestrian signs) and you will see drivers going 10miles an hour and people confidently walking in the crosswalks.

Wow,tough crowd out there, since I am retired Law Enforcement, all you have to do is Google Teenage traffic accident deaths on Long Island and you will see where I can make an" Intelligent Observation" on this case. The Police are still looking for information on how this happened,it states that right in the story.Pedestrtans appear to have the right of way in St.James based on the Crosswalks they put in.As for my grammar, I am Living La Vida Loca in retirement so I could care less what anyone thinks of me.

stfu hes my friend he wasnt going fast it was an accident
justme August 24, 2012 at 08:12 PM
Well, you have clearly explained things Ironman, sounds like you are just an angry, old, prejudice, ex-law enforcer. Keep on Living La Vida Loca, sounds fitting.

I am not sure what is being done to figure out what happened, i am just a local resident, near the site that heard the accident. There was no skid and there was no crash sound. I am not an expert but it leads me to believe that the driver did not see the man and was not going very fast (just an assumption). The facts i know is, after seeing exactly where the man was hit, i blame the town!! The street light was out, the brush on the side of the road is coming into the street and the trees are hanging over the street which makes it darker than usual nighttime visability. The sound I heard was a loud swoosh. We looked around our house to figure out what it was because the sound was so strange, minutes later Railroad avenue was swarming with cars, trucks and lights flashing. Since so many people walk, jog and ride their bikes along the 1/2 mile long road, there should be other safety measures put in place starting with the trimming of over grown weeds that belong to the town.

As retired law enforcement I would welcome your perspective on how many investigations you completed by "googling" statistics, rather than conducting an actual investigation of the incident. "Hey Sarge, I just looked up accident rates for this region for drivers this age and of this gender, Let's just arrest the driver based on that, rather than the direct evidence in the case." Great police work.

Prayers to Kyle & his family & also the victim!

For those who have been through times when it's been really hurtful thank you for understanding that it is not easy losing someone important in your life. And for those who are saying that the kid who killed our brother think about losing your family member and then say how it feels to be really hurtin inside it's also not cool to talk about a person who has passed away it's really hurtful ya should just talk about something else other then bullshit.
Santos September 15, 2012 at 02:16 AM
These people who think that killing another person is amusing well it's actually not. You guys should really think twice about doing something stupid because there could be consequences. And it is really messed up that they let the kid who ran our brother over because if it was us latins we would be in jail already. And for those racis people out there how would you feel if it would be you people would be talking about. The shit people say that it's cool killing a Hispanic is actually cruel. We are all humans people. Elbia Maldonado approves this message. If you don't like it say something about it.
Santos September 15, 2012 at 02:30 AM
Thank you for your prayers it means very much to the family.
