Police Close Portions of LIE Due to Icy Conditions

Eastern portions of roadway closed as of 6:15 p.m., further closures being considered.

Slick roadways due to a snow and icy rains have caused Suffolk County police to close portions of the Long Island Expressway on Tuesday night.

Police have shut down the LIE from Exit 68/William Floyd Parkway to Exit 72 in both directions as of 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday due to icy road conditions. There is no estimate when the LIE will be reopened.

New York State Department of Transportation staff members say police officers have shut down the roadways in efforts to get plows and sands out there immediately to clear icy slush off the highway and sand the pavement to provide tractions.

While other sections of the LIE remain open, police have said that conditions are "horrible, the worst possible" and further closures are under consideration.

One section that is causing traffic problems is near Exit 57/Route 454 (Veterans Memorial Highway) in Hauppauge, according to police.
