Sandy Crimes: Storm Recovery Marred by Incidents

Looting and gas station disputes popped up across the region.

As locals in Northern Suffolk County and the East End of Long Island struggles to recover in the days following Superstorm Sandy's pummeling of the region, some areas saw specific crimes tied to the disaster.

Here is a list of a few:

- Police said a Riverhead man was arrested Thursday evening after they said he got in a verbal dispute at the Hess Station on Route 25 in Mattituck, and proceeded to drive drunk. He was arrested on misdemeanor DWI charges.

- Police arrested a Stony Brook teenager after he allegedly threatened to stab gas station employees. According to one employee, the 17-year-old asked for premium gas, which had sold out of earlier that morning. "He told us we better go find it," an employee said, adding that a little bit of foul language was thrown into the exchange. "So we told him 'You gotta go. We don't have it.' He said 'I got a knife on me. I'm going to stab you guys.'"

- An 18-year-old East Hampton man was arrested on a petty larceny charge in on Nov. 3, after he allegedly stole a gasoline canister and two segments of garden hose from a house on Mako Lane in Amagansett. A resident of Mako Lane called police at about 2:45 a.m. when she saw the man carrying a large plastic gas can and hosing toward a vehicle. She yelled out to him and he fled. Town police stopped a Chevrolet Blazer on Bluff Road, near Dune Crest, and found the defendant with the canister and hose on his lap. He was placed under arrest at 3:20 a.m. He was released on $100 station house bail. Police withheld the defendant's name due to youthful offender status eligibility.

- A gasoline looter struck Warren's Nursery on Majors Path in Southampton sometime between Nov. 3 and Nov. 5, police said. According to the report, someone climbed a fence on the property, broke a window and stole an empty gas can from one of the buildings. Subsequently, the person then siphoned gas out of several vehicles that were parked on the property.

- A quantity of copper piping was reported stolen from several homes on Cold Spring Point Road in Southampton that suffered storm damage. Extra patrols in the area were requested by the complainant.

- On Nov. 2, a New York City woman reported that alcoholic beverages were stolen from her home in Sag Harbor during the recent hurricane and some damage was done to the interior of the home. The house is located on Noyac Road.

- A burglary was reported in Hampton Bays Oct. 28 during which copper piping from a basement was removed from a home on Fairview Road.

The crimes reported above are just the tip of the iceberg. Disasters bring out the the best AND the worst in people. In addition to the good Samaritans and heroes, there are the two-legged scavengers and predators.

Let's not get carried away here, this is not exactly NOLA after Katrina. 1.5 million people live in Suffolk county. If that's the worst of it, I'd say we behaved pretty well.

I know from where I speak. More happened than what is reported in this article.

A list of homes in remsenberg had been robbed. A few in Quogue also. Why did they not report this......not for gas but flat screen t.V's and electronics.

Forget the north shore, what about all the looting in Mastic?

We need more patrols. I mean REAL patrol. We don't need cops sitting guarding a traffic light. We needed them guarding our homes. We were in a state of emergency. Did anyone see them patrolling your neighbor? I hope the police are learning something from this.

Why is this reported a month after the fact? Could it be because election is over??? Where the heck was Bishop???? Ohhhhh election is over....

what does one have to do with the other?

Did ANYONE learn from this? Why wasn't zone B evacuated in Queens and why didn't the news media deliver a stronger warning about this storm. I pleaded with family and friends to take this storm seriously but few listened. My husband and I were ready for the wallop and weathered it well but our friends anf family did not fare as well. You MUST AlWAYS be prepared to evecuate on short notice. Unavoidable stuff can happen on a moment's notice. You MUST be ready to run or hunker down for extended periods without assistance. You will need:
*1 gallon of water per day PER PERSON *Non-Perishable ready to eat foods (peanut butter, fish/meats in pouches, cereals, protein bars, etc) sugar, salt and pepper wil make any field food taste more palatable *Warm (and waterproof if applicable) clothing (layers) and blankets, gloves, socks *prescriptions and OTC meds (Tylenol, bandages, antiseptics, Immodium, thermometer, Batteries, battery op radio, flashlights, matches, duct tape, a good hunting or utility knife, rope, zip ties, fishing line (also good for Making small game traps) and lures, a gun (if you have one), large plastic contractor bags for making shelter and rain gear, sturdy walking boots, flares, compass * a good survival book, waterproof matches, at least $500 in cash, a full tank of gas.

so true. so true. definitely a cover up going on all around by the news media with regard to many events associated with sandy. Very suspicious.
Enough of this November 29, 2012 at 02:46 am
the media is not covering the story associated with sandy aftermath. we have people on streets of long island begging...never in my life have i seen that until now. think there is some sort of political reason that this is not being covered on news... has to be. i know firsthand of many events that are not being reported. Long Beach, by the way, is like a third world country. Lots of stuff happening there that is not being covered on news. Same in Mastic and Rockaways

You are absolutely right pj. Its comparing apples to oranges. Assisted living is for the elderlyRead More that cant take care of themselves. What noise is created. They are indoors and at the age where driving may not be an option. And the facility faces Route 25A. A main corridor that has been used as a main road for over 50 years. A road that has gas stations, bars, hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and high schools presently on it. Why not an assisted living.

Exactly. Don't see a problem having it. Many of them don't even go outdoors.

We have an assisted living center right next to our neighborhood. For the most part it is quiet,Read More there is not a lot more traffic, it even looks nice. I will take it over another strip mall, supermarket, bar any day . Like the previous poster wrote, it serves our community.
