Three Car Crash Closes Middle Country Road Near Mall

One-mile stretch of Route 25 closed from Smith Haven Mall to Stony Brook Road/Hawkins Road.

Suffolk County police have closed down portion of Middle Country Road following a three-car accident on Thursday night.

Police said they received a 911 call at 5:48 p.m. Thursday reporting a serious accident on Middle Country Road and New Moriches Road intersection, at the exit of the DSW shopping plaza.

Two people were injured in the crash, one a woman with serious injuries who was taken for treatment via ambulance, according to police.

Volunteer firefighters for Selden fire department said one vehicle went up in flames after the crash and heavy technical rescue was called in.

Police have shut down a roughly one-mile stretch of Route 25/Middle Country between Moriches Road, a main entrance into Smith Haven Mall, east to Stony Brook Road/Hawkins Road. The southern portion of New Moriches Road is also closed as of 8:20 p.m.

The road closure has severely backed up Middle Country Road in the areas surrounding Smith Haven Mall, sending evening traffic onto side streets and local roadways.
