UPDATED: Smithtown Woman Killed in Crash

Three-car crash occurred Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Route 347 and Moriches Road.

A Smithtown woman who was seriously injured Sunday afternoon in a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 347 and Moriches Road in Lake Grove has died of her injuries.

According to Suffolk County Police, Carmela Cardillo, of Smithtown, died at Stony Brook University Medical Center Sunday night. She was 78 years old.

At 2:32 p.m., Joseph Abdenour, 87, of Smithtown, lost control of his 2000 Toyota sedan while driving eastbound on Route 347. The vehicle crossed over into the westbound lane and struck a 2010 Mercedes SUV waiting to make a turn onto Moriches Road. The SUV then struck a 2010 Honda SUV that was also waiting to make a turn onto Moriches Road.

Cardillo, a passenger in Abdenour's car, was seriously injured and was transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center and admitted in critical condition.

Abdenour and the two occupants of the Mercedes SUV were also taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the Honda SUV were not injured.

All three vehicles were impounded for a safety check and the Sixth Precinct police continue to investigate the situation.
