Suspect in Stony Brook Rape Case Arraigned, Held on $1 Million Bail

Patrick O'Sullivan was arraigned on Sunday in First District Court in Central Islip.

The 20-year-old East Moriches man charged with raping a woman in Stony Brook was arraigned on Sunday, and is being held on $1 million bail, court records show.

Patrick O'Sullivan was arrested Saturday and charged with first-degree rape, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal sexual act, second-degree kidnapping and first-degree criminal use of a firearm after police say he sexually assaulted a woman inside a Stony Brook home on Nov. 20.

It was not immediately clear whether the defendant entered a plea. A district attorney spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment and a report published in Newsday was unable to confirm.

Court records online indicate that a temporary order of protection was issued at Sunday's proceeding, and O'Sullivan is due back in court on Dec. 6.

Detective Lt. William Burke told Newsday that the crimes were not random; he said the defendant "had some knowledge of the family that lived at that home."

"Obviously anybody who was concerned about him will be relieved now, but we didn't think there was a huge threat to the general public," Burke said.

The Suffolk County Police Department formally announced the investigation on Friday, following several days of rumors that circulated throughout communities in Three Village where the crime occured.

I used to go to boarding school with this kid. Crazy stuff. I knew he needed help but didn't know it was at this level. So sorry for the victim
