Teen Faces Felony for Allegedly Threatening Shooting At Smithown Soccer Game

Twitter post threatens violence at Smithtown West boys soccer Suffolk championship game, set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Suffolk County police have arrested a Bay Shore teen who allegedly threatened a shooting would occur at Smithtown West boys soccer match against Central Islip Thursday evening. 

Mario Cernas, 19, was arrested at his home at approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to police. He is facing one Class D felony charge of making a terroristic threat and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday. 

Police said Third Squad detectives were notified on Wednesday afternoon of a Twitter post dating to November 4 stated a shooting would occur at Smithtown West boys soccer team game against Central Islip in the finals of the Suffolk Class AA championship scheduled to be played 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Dowling College. 

Cernas allegedly tweeted from his account, @Mc3xo,“CI BETTER (expletive) WIN OR IM SHOOTING SOME ONE AT DOWLING,” according to the Long Island Press's report. 

The Twitter post was retweeted 10 times and marked as a favorite by three individuals, according to Twitter's post statistics. 

Based on its time, the tweet appeared to be posted after No. 1-ranked Smithtown West beat Brentwood in the quarterfinals, 3-2, on Monday. Cernas is wearing a Brentwood shirt in his mug shot photo. 

Police were not sure if the Class AA championship game will be played tonight as scheduled.
