As Long Island braced for heavy thunderstorms and high winds on Tuesday, points in Smithtown already began to feel the effects of the coming deluge.
At Long Beach in Nissequogue, the afternoon high tide coupled with the swirling winds pushed water over the road leading to the beach, which could make it dangerous for smaller or low-profile cars.
National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for Long Island starting Tuesday at noon and lasting until 6 a.m. Wednesday, with winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour and gusts of 50 or even 60 miles an hour possible.
The region has seen a spate of heavy rain storms in August, though so far Long Island has been spared any hurricane threats.
