Dems, GOP Agree: The Tolls Are Too Damn High

But respondents from both parties in our political insiders poll are divided on how toll money can best be put to use.

Democratic and Republican insiders agree on one thing: New York's tolls are too high and create a burden that saddles some citizens more than others, that's the finding in our latest Blue Empire and Red Empire surveys.

Influential Republicans were outspoken on the issue, with nearly 80 percent saying they felt tolls were too high in the state. Meanwhile, more than 63 percent of Democrats surveyed shared the same sentiment. In fact, only 3.5 percent of Dems said they strongly disagreed that tolls are too high, while zero percent of Republicans disagreed to that extent.

The survey results follow several toll hikes in the past few years for area river crossings that have raised costs significantly for local motorists. At the same time, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday told Hudson Valley residents that a $5.2 billion plan to replace the aging Tappan Zee Bridge has gotten the backing of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council. That plan would be funded by federal cash and tolls that some say could hit $14 a trip by 2017.

The state is also considering a 45 percent toll hike for trucks on the New York Thruway.

But insiders in both parties told Patch these hikes don't hit everybody the same way. In fact, the parties were statistically identical on this issue.

More than 60 percent of respondents in both parties said they disagree with the notion that the burden of toll hikes is shared equally while about 20 percent in each party said they agreed with statement.

Patch polled more than 250 respondents in early August as part of our Red Empire and Blue Empire political insiders polls. As of Aug. 20, 57 Democrats and 34 Republicans submitted answers.

Republicans Favors Businesses, Democrats Favor Drivers

Democrats and Republicans both overwhelming felt that tolls should be invested into creating public transportation, but when it came to what that infrastructure should benefit most, they didn't all agree.

Republicans favored business development in our poll, with 44 percent saying they felt any public transportation investment should support business and industry in the state, compared to nearly 27 percent who said that investments should be made in public transportation that simply reduce road traffic. Only 6 percent said that public transport should be created to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Meanwhile, Democrats surveyed leaned towards road traffic as their top issue, with 34 percent saying public transportation should unclog roads, 25 percent saying transit is needed to curb greenhouse gas emissions and 21 percent saying transit should focus on boosting business and industry.

Enough is Enough

With tolls hikes on the table for roadways, bridges and mass transit, most respondents called for some relief for state commuters.

About 63 percent of Democrats said the Metropolitan Transit Authority should abandon its plan to hike train, bus and subway fares in March intended to help trim its massive deficits. Republicans agreed, with 65 percent of respondents saying the MTA should not raise fares.

Democrats and Republicans also think regular audits need to be done to track the spending on toll dollars, with 82 percent of Dems and 97 percent of Republicans supporting that measure.

And though Republicans were near unanimous in favoring public-private partnerships to fund major bridge and road projects, they idea wasn't as unpopular with Democrats as you might expect. Nearly 50 percent said they would support these types of arrangements, while nearly 32 percent said they opposed them.

The Red Empire and Blue Empire Surveys

Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in New York. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions. Surveys were conducted between Aug. 1 and Aug. 20, 2012.

Patch will be conducting Red Empire State and Blue Empire State surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in New York. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a weekly surveys that last just a few minutes, please email Henry@patch.com.)

At least Obama didn't start an illegal and immoral war like that war criminal Bush did. He's being kept away from the Republican convention

Nassau is one of the most corrupt counties in the country. It's loaded with mob interest and mob contractors.Take a look at the bus co.that recently took over from Illinois (hint, hint) every small bus contract, every single contract the Co.signs.Town of Hempstead has 10 Republican Committeemen making over 100 grand a year working in the dog pound

A lie is a good reason John? This country doesn't care about dictators or how many people they kill.Iraq was started on a lie by Bush and now it's being admitted that we went in there for oil. A lot of people to kill and maim for oil.No wonder the Iraq Vets are throwing their medals away.

Jeffrey Immelt of GE is Obama's jobs czar. His company is one of the biggest outsourcers of jobs. And you think Obama is the solution?

Ryan's hometown in Wisconsin has unemployment of 9.5% as does the entire area surrounding it. How's that genius going to help the rest of that nation get employed when he can't even help a small area of Wisconsin. Everybody has the answer...but the saga continues.
Nurse Ratchet August 26, 2012 at 01:04 pm
Jaguar - I'm disappointed with your comment. If you read the Southampton Press's factual accounting of the Bishop story, you would know that the donor "asked" for clarification regarding campaign contribution limits and that a contribution was NOT solicited. This is a non-event. A lie that is being worked to the Nth degree by the smear-meister Randy Outsourcer Altschuler. It's the best he can do to discredit Bishop as Altlschuler does not have a plan for this country that he can sell to the American people. They're not buying his line of self-serving BS. If they vote for him, I will be sorely disappointed.
Jaguar-Guy August 26, 2012 at 01:06 pm
How are Oblama and VP Idiot going to make a difference? He is now promising to do in his 2nd term, all the wonderful things he promised to accomplish in his 1st term - genius. His "jobs bill" is just "Stimulus 2.0". Obama's Budget was voted on - 99-0 AGAINST !!!
Jaguar-Guy August 26, 2012 at 01:13 pm
Nurse - I disagree as much as possible with your interpretation. Molly Bishop directed Semler to donate BEFORE the 26th, so they could maximize $5k each donation for $10k. The Semler's NEVER made ANY donation like this before - and it does not take Sherlock and Dr. Watson to see the scam here. If it was legit, why donate the $10k to charity - why not deny the permit so as to NOT KILL the Plovers ??? What an environmentally sensitive Congressman we have - take the money - kill the protected birds. That is the same as "leave the gun, take the canolli".
Jaguar-Guy August 26, 2012 at 01:16 pm
WI unemployment rate is 7.1% as of July, 2012. WAY better than the national averages of Obama, because of Gov. Walker - who WON TWICE. The unemployment rate for 20-25 year olds is 12% - and they are no longer in love with Obama and will lodge their protest votes and no-show votes and are NOT helping the campaign in record numbers.

immoral? you suppose bringing down a murderous dictator is immoral? interesting set of morals you live by
John Gruber August 26, 2012 at 05:52 pm
i agree with what we did, not the reason. If he said I want to kill the dictator who's helping supply terrorists that attacked us, I'd be all for it. but he said he was looking for wmd's which no none found yet still invaded. again, agree with what they did, not why they did it
John Gruber August 26, 2012 at 06:00 pm
fun fact: no matter who you elected in the past election, they were not going to undo changes that brought us to the worst economic situation in 60 years in a matter of 3 short years. whether you voted for mccain or obama you cannot expect to fix this in a matter of 2 or 3 years. not logical, and to blame someone for not fixing this, even less. no matter who i voted for in the last one i'd elect them again because either way, it would not have been fixed by now
Robert Demarco August 26, 2012 at 06:45 pm
If he gets reelected, you will not like the second term, either economically, healthcare wise, or the Socialist direction he takes the country. We will no longer be a superpower in any category. There will be more and more people with their hands out, not the truly needy, but the lazy bloodsuckers, and middle and upper class taxes will rise to pay for all of this. And do not think the Dems had nothing to with this mess. As I said before, it was the revered Bill Clinton who made Fannie and Freddie give home loans to unqualified borrowers, because he felt that everyone should own a home.
John Gruber August 26, 2012 at 08:17 pm
well if people like you didn't scream bloody murder at the mere sound of the word "socialism" you'd understand there are good aspects about it. If it was such a bad idea, we wouldn't be one of the only industrialized country without "socialized" (universal) healthcare. and if you think he is a true "socialist" you're really misinformed

Obama could not get the job done; he did not have the experience and the ability when elected, he has not developed any ability to lead and we can now be pretty damn sure that his on the job training has failed. It is time to elect a man who is a leader, who has the experience and who can get the job done, end of discussion.

John Gruber August 26, 2012 at 11:36 pm
again, if you real think he's a socialist, you really don't know much about the person you're criticizing
Robert Demarco August 26, 2012 at 11:53 pm
Nobody knows much about Obama, and that is a problem. I read a book about him called "The Amateur". The book was written by someone not favorable to Obama, so I realize that it is one-sided, but it brought out his lack of a track record, his lack of experience, and the disreputable people who shaped his life. Maybe if he is only a Socialist, that might be better than what he might really be. We just don't know because he has gone to great lengths to hide his past.
Love This City August 27, 2012 at 12:44 am
Not a Republican - Not a Democrat - I am an independent.
I said it 4 years ago and I was right. "We do not need Obama and his "Change" we need George Washington and his revolution" Most of the comments on this thread are based on a fact that many forget about our founding father. He hated government!! George Washington KNEW and we know now, no matter what government is formed, eventually it does NOT act in the best interests of the people it was created to govern. At that point, George said, we must take the government back.... While not advocating a bloody revolution, most of the ideas brought forth by liberals are not based on the constitution or even the basis this country was founded on. People keep talking about giving the government OUR hard earned money like a tithe or something we OWE just for the fact that the government exists. That is not how it is or the way it should be. The government should be minimal not maximum in our lives and in our checkbooks. Good for anyone who follows the rules and protects their money. Unless there is a crime committed they have done NOTHING wrong ethically, morally, or legally. Everyone can talk about "fair share" but I believe that this country was founded on a simple premise, "No taxation, without representation" well in 2012 we should have "No representation without Taxation"!!! If you do not have any "skin" in the game and living off of all the hard working people of America why should you be able to vote?
Preliator August 27, 2012 at 01:20 am
John, it is not that Obama is a socialist, Marxist or any of the like...he is just in, way in, over his head, and it shows.
Look, it was a nice story with great characters, hope and change, warm and fuzzy. Obama had his shot, he blew it, game over, time to move on. We voted for the cool guy in 2008, the guy every one likes; it did not work. It is time to elect the serious nerd that every one likes to make fun of. We need the square, the guy who knows how to get things done, the guy who can surround himself with team who can get the job done. Romney, Ryan and Randy: Building a Better Tomorrow Today.

If it were a conversation, would I be making comment. The point is , Patch offers the community no value if it simply becomes another forum for anonymous insults, and the rest of crap being hurled around. It seems the more thoughtful (and informed) posters quickly drift away. Though, for the life of me, I cannot understand why a few, that can present intelligent ideas without resorting to name calling, still stick around and fence with the others.
JOE August 27, 2012 at 11:34 am
I think this post needs a reality check . Minimal government means you let the corporations run wild exploiting the environment, exploiting the empoyees, and and exploiting everything else they can for the sake of GREED. It is a fact that between the 1930's and up until the early 1970's the time period was known as the golden age of prosperity. There were plenty of regulations and government involvement . What was the result .People were able to buy homes, raise families on one income . send their children to college and enjoy life alot more than people do today. the reality is that corporate americai has been screwwing the american people out of tax money for over 20 years while they make million and billions of dollars . You want freedom and deregulation? look at the airlines, you got it and look at what we have , we get nickel and dimed for everything . bags, food, window seats , having your children sit next to you .they would charge you extra to use the bathroom if they could . It is sickening , but this is what you call minimal government where you let everybody run wild . As Far as Geaorge Washington goes, It is well known in history that the father of our country had a 1 million dolar expense account when he was the general in the Army. What was he doing with a million dollars . Also in the 1800's when the governmet was "minimal" , the Carnegies , Mellons, Astors and vanderbilts. How do you think they made their fortunes? exploitation of people , environment etc
JOE August 27, 2012 at 11:36 am
