Dismissed Traffic Tickets Come With a Fee

Lawmakers seek changes as motorists get socked with fees even when found not guilty.

County Legis. Rob Calarco, D-Patchogue, says he plans to introduce a bill that will come as a delight to many motorists.

Under the bill, people who have traffic tickets dismissed as not guilty will no longer have to cough up a $30 or $50 administrative fee, according to a Newsday report

Suffolk's Traffic & Parking Violations Agency was formed earlier this year and has
been hit with complaints from residents who have had their tickets dismissed only to find out they are still on the hook for the administrative fee.

"If you're innocent, you shouldn't have to pay," Calarco told Newsday. "I don't think it's fair to individuals in that position."

Newsday reported that Suffolk's Traffic & Parking Violations Agency has projected that $5 million of the $18 million in revenue from the county's red light camera program will come from $30 processing fees next year.
