Checking in from Alabama. I have a sister on Annette Avenue. Haven't been able to communicate with her this morning. Any idea of the extent of damage in that area? Dad in Ireland is extremely worried as he can't get any news.

Elderly mother on the southern end of Maple Ave. As of 6 last night when she lost power, two oaks had fallen near the house in the backyard. Anyone down there? Briaroot Dr.
Peter Verry (Editor) October 30, 2012 at 04:37 pm
Nancy B.,
I'm about to post a story but I will do my best to head over there and see how the road conditions are. As far as power I'm not sure but I'll try to get an update ASAP.

Elderly mother near Landing Ave and Oakside Drive. I have not been able to reach her or get any word since Monday. Anyone in that general area? I did see that much of Landing Ave. was closed.

jozee November 1, 2012 at 10:10 pm
and another thing, then i will be quiet lol, 1. look on the town's website, there has not been any updates since oct 28th why do we even bother to have an emergency management& 2 the site refers you to other agency's, 3. the closest shelter is in BRENTWOOD people, how do the old people get there?????
jeremiah bullfrog November 2, 2012 at 02:58 am
The smithtown area was hit harder than anything Ive ever seen before, treewise. I suspect it will be weeks before regular service of electric and phone lines. If your loved ones dont have cell phones, unless they borrow one, you wont be hearing rom them soon. Texting in the early morning or late evening will help you make contact. The cell towers cannot support all the overload of no land lines
Rajesh Jain November 2, 2012 at 03:02 pm
We are a little concerned about our loved ones residing in 17 Coventry Lane. We got a brief message after worst was over that they are safe but haven't heard anything since probably due to power outages. We shall appreciate any information.
Rajesh Jain November 2, 2012 at 03:24 pm
This was sort of a miracle... minutes after posting the message we got a call from them as if the message was relayed by God. Thanks.
Jim Starace November 2, 2012 at 04:04 pm
I took this video of my neighborhood in Hauppauge, NY which shows some serious damage. As of Friday morning 11am none of the houses I pass in the video have power.

The hardest hit areas in Smithtown were North of 347, especially between Old Willets and Terry rd. Between Brooksite and Mt. Pleasant Rd. Is going to take weeks to restore, At least 100 poles damaged, bent, or broken. Thats not counting the trees resting on lines that are still attached. Taking your life in your hands driving down Brooksite!

Has anyone seen tree trimming or LIPA trucks in the neighborhood behind Maureen's Kitchen? They still have not gotten to the tree that fell across the street and on the wires by my house! A few days ago our power went on for a few hours at night then was shut off again and no one has been to the area since! I thought we were close to getting it back but its been 4 days since then!

You are absolutely right pj. Its comparing apples to oranges. Assisted living is for the elderlyRead More that cant take care of themselves. What noise is created. They are indoors and at the age where driving may not be an option. And the facility faces Route 25A. A main corridor that has been used as a main road for over 50 years. A road that has gas stations, bars, hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and high schools presently on it. Why not an assisted living.
P. J. Miller June 18, 2013 at 10:06 pm
Exactly. Don't see a problem having it. Many of them don't even go outdoors.
Lilly June 19, 2013 at 09:05 am
We have an assisted living center right next to our neighborhood. For the most part it is quiet,Read More there is not a lot more traffic, it even looks nice. I will take it over another strip mall, supermarket, bar any day . Like the previous poster wrote, it serves our community.
