Help Us Patch Up Paul T. Given Park

Smithtown Patch plans park clean-up. Will you join us?

Since Smithtown Patch posted a we've gotten a big response to our suggestion that we join together and clean up the park.

So let's make it happen.

We're currently filing the permits with the county for a late-March cleanup day, and we'll announce the date as soon as it's finalized. In the interim, we just need to start building a master list of everybody who wants to join us.

Patch will bring all the cleanup materials we'd need, paint, etc. – and a few prizes for volunteers as well. If you're interested, email henry@patch.com as soon as you can.

We also spoke with Emily Leogrande, a spokeswoman for the Suffolk County Parks, about how Paul T. Given Park got so bad. According to her, Tropical Storm Irene caused a lot of damages in county parks, and since the department isn't so heavily staffed they've had to concentrate their efforts on cleanup at the larger parks. It's left the smaller county parks without much oversight by the county crews.

It also means there could be other small parks out there in disarray. Let us know if you find any, take a few photos, and maybe we can join together to clean up those as well.
