Letter to the Editor: Thank You From Flanagan

With Thanksgiving weekend here, state Sen. John Flanagan offers thanks and holiday shopping safety tips to his constituents.

As we approach the Thanksgiving weekend, I would like to extend my best wishes to you and your readers.  This is a great time for all of us to pause and reflect on the many things for which we are grateful and I hope that everyone gets the opportunity to share time with their family and loved ones.

Since Thanksgiving serves as the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season, I wanted to provide your readers with some information that will hopefully be helpful to them over the next month.

First, my office has designed an updated Helpful Holiday Safety and Shopping Tips section on my website.  This site will provide you with information that will help you protect your home and family and also give you some useful consumer tips to make shopping safer.  Residents who wish to access this important information can visit my web site at flanagan.nysenate.gov.

I also wanted to remind everyone that, due to legislation passed in the Senate, clothing and footwear sold for less than $55 per item (or per pair in the case of footwear) will be exempt from state sales tax.  Due to this change, all such purchases are free from the 4% state portion and the 3/8% MTA portion of the sales tax (which does impact residents in both Suffolk and Nassau Counties). Due to a local decision, these purchases will still be subject to county taxes in both Suffolk and Nassau Counties but free of state taxes.

Those who would like more information regarding this important tax savings benefit are invited to visit my web site at flanagan.nysenate.gov.

Again, I hope you and all of your readers have a safe and happy Thanksgiving and a joyous holiday season.

Sincerely,

John Flanagan
