Nowick Throws Her Hat in Ring for Town Board

Suffolk Legis. Lynne Nowick to join Republican primary for Smithtown Town Board this September.

Suffolk Legis. Lynne Nowick will run for a seat on Smithtown Town Board, despite not being named a candidate by Republican party leaders.

Nowick handed in a petition with roughly 1,350 signatures - more than twice the 500 needed - to the county board of elections late Friday, Times of Smithtown reports.

She will create a three-way race for two board seats against fellow Republican incumbents Tom McCarthy and Kevin Malloy. A primary will be held in September to determine whose name gets on the November ballot.

Nowick is term-limited from seeking re-election to her county seat representing the 13th District -  which includes parts of Smithtown, Kings Park, Fort Salonga, Nissequogue, Head of the Harbor, St. James and Commack - where she's served for the past 12 years.

Her late father, Eugene Cannataro, also previously served 24 years as a town board member.

"I'd love to sit in his seat," Nowick told Times of Smithtown. "I'm sure he's up there smiling, saying, 'Go, go, go.'"

Nowick is a lifelong resident of St. James. She was previously the tax receiver for the Town of Smithtown for six years, and before that worked in the county court system, according to her website
