Kennedy said the series would help the local economy.

“It’s a great economic stimulus in our community,” he said. “The funding is derived from the [Suffolk County] hotel/motel tax. The lodging tax comes from everyone that comes into Suffolk County to stay overnight.”

King Kullen in St. James is seeking a zone change for a parcel of land in order to expand the store 4,355 square feet, but is seeing opposition from VFW Post 395, who fears the store will build right up to its property line, and locals in fear of increased traffic.

“We do not oppose King Kullen expanding their store,” said Frank Todaro, commander of VFW Post 395. “Our concern is the way that they will expand the store in relation to our property … we’ll be crowded in and we feel that we’ll be crowded out.”

King Kullen's lawyer Vincent J. Pizzulli Jr., said the expansion if to build out the store’s interior, including widening the isles and adding to the produce section.

St. James resident Jim Riley said the traffic in the area is already congested and increasing the size of the store would add to its congestion.

The land is currently zoned as 10,000 square foot residential, and they are seeking a zone change to the zone change to CB, or Central Business.
