Smithtown Notebook: Community Complains About Main Street Safety

Smithtown residents speak out on Main Street safety, parades throughout the town and other events get permits and more this week in Town Hall.

An item that did not appear on the agenda for Tuesday’s town board meeting dominated the community discussion – Main Street safety.

Speakers included Lavena Sipes, the mother of , Barbara Gallagher, mother-in-law of the late Seamus Byrne who as killed on Main Street in February, Mark Mancini, owner of Mancini Architecture, who brought visual aides of plans on how Main Street could be constructed to make it safer for pedestrians, and more.

Main Street, also known as Route 25, is a state roadway, Town Supervisor Patrick Vecchio and councilman Edward Wehrheim said. Wehrheim added that many of the ideas Mancini’s proposed, which include reducing the four-lane road to three lanes, were similar to those proposed by the town and rejected by , who is in charge of the roadway.

Dog Show, Farmers Market, Carnival’s and More Permit’s Granted

The town board approved permits for the following upcoming events in Smithtown, Nissequogue, Kings Park and Commack:

  • Nissequogue River State Park Foundation Sunset Run/Walk
  • Friends & Farmers/Kings Park Civic Association Farmers Market
  • Smithtown Children’s Foundation 5K Walk/Run
  • Suffolk County Kennel Club Dog Show at Flowerfield Fair Grounds
  • Airmid Theatre Carnival at Kings Park Plaza

First readings were heard for the Smithtown Christian School Run/Walk, Wood Park Primary School Annual Fitness Walk and the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce Kings Park Day.

Upcoming Town Meetings

The Board of Assessment Review will hold a Grievance Day at the Smithtown Landing Country Club on Tuesday, May 17. Hours for this will be from 10 a.m. to noon, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Planning Board will hold a meeting at the Smithtown Senior Center on Wednesday, May 18 at 8 p.m.
