Smoking Ban Passes for Town Parks, Beaches

Town board unanimous in Tuesday vote.

The Town of Smithtown on Tuesday voted unanimously to make it illegal to smoke at town beaches and parks, becoming one of a handful of municipalities in the state to enact such a ban.

The move also makes it illegal to smoke within 50 feet of town buildings.

A similar ban in New York state was actually lifted in May following pressure from a New York City-based smokers advocacy group. The state is hoping to reinstate the ban.

What do you think of Smithtown's smoking ban? Let us know in the comments.

Really sorry to hear that it passed. I'm a former smoker and can't stand the smell of smoke anymore. But I truly believe that all our rights are slowly being taken away. What's next. We can't eat trans fats in NYC. We can't eat salt and we have to breast feed our children. What kind of country are we turning into. All I can say is I'm so glad that Obama didn't pick Bloomberg as his running VP. We are turning into a gestapo state and God help us all.

@Steve, it's sad if your joy stems from an addiction. Personally, I don't have kids, but for the most part, they don't bother me. I don't understand why someone should be entitled to fill the air with carcinogens in a public space, which is why I am glad they're banning smoking. Also, consider the fact that there are countless cigarette butts on the beach - that is absolutely filthy, and one way to eliminate that, is eliminate the problem. Look, I absolutely am for personal freedom, but that freedom shouldn't impede on any one else's quality of life, or enjoyment of resources (such as state parks) that we're all entitled to. At the end of the day, it's an issue of people not respecting the properties, and each other's personal space, and hopefully, this will improve that.

I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD RIDE THEIR BIKES OR WALK TO THE BEACHES AND PARKS. THE EXHUST FROM THE CARS CAN KILL PEOPLE ( RUNNING YOUR CAR IN A CLOSED GARAGE IS A WAY TO COMMITE SUICIDE ). THESE FUMES CAN CAUSE ME AND MY CHILDREN IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE. YOU SHOULD ONLY RUN YOUR CAR IN YOU OWN HOUSE WHERE YOUR NOT AFFECTING OTHER PEOPLE AROUND YOU. SEE HOW DUMB THIS SOUNDS. BY THE WAY I DONT SMOKE, I JUST NOT A BIG WIMP THAT NEEDS A LAW AND GOVERMENT TO CONTROL MY LIFE!!!
