Update: All flights after 6 p.m. Thursday have been canceled, Long Island MacArthur Airport posted on their Twitter Thursday afternoon. The airport advises customers to check with their carrier for updated information. Original story below:

Several airlines canceled and delayed flights at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma on Thursday, as winter storm Hercules gets set to dump nearly a foot of snow on the region.

The airport has posted on their Twitter feed that travelers should check with their carrier for updated flight information due to the winter storm.

Both Southwest Airlines and US Airways have posted winter weather advisories for customers, and will be holding a relaxed cancellation policy for flights that may become affected.

Southwest on its website states that customers holding reservations to and from MacArthur from Thursday through Friday at 1 p.m. are able to re-book in the original class of service or travel standby within 14 days of their original date of travel with no additional fees. Customers who purchased online can reschedule their travel plans through the website, and others can re-book by calling 1-800-435-9792. Customers can also request a refund for any flight that is cancelled.

US Airways has posted a similar advisory for Islip, waiving the change fee policies for Thursday and Friday flights. Flights can be re-booked to Jan. 3 to Jan. 5. However customers will have to pay if there is a difference in fare.

Allegiant Air has a winter advisory section on its website, but none of the affected flights listed run through MacArthur. PenAir’s website also says there is a winter advisory in effect, but did not include any details.

Islip Town councilman John Cochrane said the terminal does not close during a winter storm in order to accommodate stranded passengers, and that there are staff and extra crews for the snow.
