Suffolk DA Expands Sandy Cleanup Probe to Smithtown

DA's investigation focuses on whether proper wages were paid, how contractors selected for storm cleanup.

Smithtown town officials are among the latest to receive a grand jury subpoena from Suffolk County district attorney's office as it expands an investigation into Sandy's cleanup.

Newsday reports Town Clerk Vincent Puleo confirmed on Monday night Smithtown was served a subpoena on April 11 for any and all records relating to Sandy, including contractors hired for cleanup work. 

The subpoena was forwarded to Town Attorney John Zollo's office as the records requested are stored by multiple town departments. Smithtown officials could appear before a grand jury as early as Tuesday to verify all of the town's files were submitted.

District Attorney Thomas Spota's office began investigating how town governments across Long Island selected and paid contractors for cleanup work post Sandy. The towns of Islip, Brookhaven and Babylon have also been served subpoenas.
