Suffolk Elections Board: The Vote Will Go On

Officials working with LIPA to make sure polling places have power, will hook up generators at ones that don't.

While darkened schools, libraries and senior centers have folks wondering what Election Day will be like, Suffolk County's Board Elections on Thursday said the polls will have power one way or the other.

Jesse Garcia, an official with the Suffolk County Board of Elections and chairman of the Brookhaven Republicans, said he fully expects all 342 polling centers in the county to be up and running.

"We have been in contact with LIPA and the state board or elections to make sure school and polling places are a powering priority," Garcia said, adding they have already secured 200 generators to help power polling places and have reached out to fire departments across the county to secure more.

The possibility of paper ballots isn't off the table, Garcia said, but that decision hasn't been made yet.

As for damaged polling places, Garcia said the BOE has sent spotters to asses every one to see that they are fit for Election Day.

The one question mark is Fire Island, which has been closed off since Hurricane Sandy lashed the barrier island on Monday. BOE officials are expected to assess polling places there on Friday.

"We just want to make sure the public has a very simple, easy way to participate in the election," Garcia said.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer also told Patch on Thursday to expect a smooth Election Day, and confirmed that the BOE will be setting up generators in stricken polling places.

"It is extremely important that voting take place so that people feel some sense of normalcy - exercising their rights on Election Day. I think it's part of the healing process, especially during a presidential election."

Glad to hear that they will be watching the polls.

I hope you all have enough gas to get to the polls. Unless you plan on voting for that Randy dude.

On one hand I think how come so many were not prepared? On the other hand some people were unable to afford the preparations or are elderly and didn't have help.
We have to rely on ourselves and not big government! Getting upset because you were not prepared and now the govt is not helping enough is ridiculous.

Bill sir: You and JEN are correct. You can NEVER DEPEND ON GOVERMENT to take care of you or for help.

Updates on the radio would help. I would suggest 1010 wins. They repeat the news all day.

Really, polling places are a priority?? Come on.. we need POWER in our houses!
Momma Bear November 2, 2012 at 03:29 pm
you guys are right , we don't need to depend on the government. i know i will be writing in Gary Johnson . don't vote for the lesser of the 2 evils. Romney and Obama are both puppets. many people don't realize this. it's time to wake up

It's not clear - are polling stations in Southampton open? Some on Facebook are saying much of Suffolk County will not be open and people are applying for absentee ballots.

VOTE "AQUI"
What a pathetic illustration of how we have lost our country!

Don't forget to NOT bring your ID to the polling place!

One day can change the next four years of your life. I plan on voting. I will travel if I have to. You cannot complain if you choose not to vote. You speak through your vote. Please vote.

That is so messed up. My family and pets can freeze to death but we will still be able to vote. They may want to rethink this as New York should be embarrassed with their response to this emergency. The gas situation alone is inexcusable.

Even though most of us regular folks have lost power, I bet you Tim Bishop's house has power. http://www.crewsmostcorrupt.org/mostcorrupt/entry/tim-bishop

what about the people who have been displaced? I have a family member who is staying with a friend closer to work near the nassau/suffolk border, and unless things change quickly, will not have enough gas to get back to riverhead in order to vote.

I can't wait to see what "Accountable" really means to the Govenor. Hopefully it is not just a bunch of hot air....even though we could use some at my house.

Can Patch get some updates on actual locations that will be open?

If Bayview School still has no power-- is there a new polling center for West Islip Residents?
Kaitlyn Piccoli (Editor) November 5, 2012 at 03:48 pm
Melissa- As far as we know, no West Islip polling places have been impacted or changed. Many places that are without power will have generators tomorrow. We'll reach out to the board of elections to confirm.

My elderly parents from Huntington are staying with us near Boston MA as they have no power in Cold Spring Hills. They are politically engaged and would like to vote but won't have the chance due to their Sandy storm dislocation and no provision for voters stranded outside of their districts. This doesn't make sense.

My sister and brother-in-law are in Fl. and have not returned because they have no electric at their Huntington home. How do they vote?? They are very upset.

You are absolutely right pj. Its comparing apples to oranges. Assisted living is for the elderlyRead More that cant take care of themselves. What noise is created. They are indoors and at the age where driving may not be an option. And the facility faces Route 25A. A main corridor that has been used as a main road for over 50 years. A road that has gas stations, bars, hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and high schools presently on it. Why not an assisted living.
P. J. Miller June 18, 2013 at 10:06 pm
Exactly. Don't see a problem having it. Many of them don't even go outdoors.
Lilly June 19, 2013 at 09:05 am
We have an assisted living center right next to our neighborhood. For the most part it is quiet,Read More there is not a lot more traffic, it even looks nice. I will take it over another strip mall, supermarket, bar any day . Like the previous poster wrote, it serves our community.
