Town Board Pursues Land to Improve Dangerous Nesconset Intersection

Smithtown Town Board votes unanimously to work with owner of parcel off Gibbs Pond Road and Lake Avenue.

Smithtown Town officials are pressing forward with negotiating with a Nesconset land owner for property to improve a dangerous intersection.

Smithtown Town Board voted unanimously for the town to work cooperatively with a land owner of 3,000 square feet of a busy Nesconset intersection to obtain the land and use it to improve the intersection, Newsday reports.

“We’re trying to work it out amicably between the owner and the town so we can proceed with the project this year, hopefully,” Councilman Thomas McCarthy said to Newsday.

The town attorney and planning department were instructed to clear any potential issues that would prevent the town from purchasing the land - or having it donated -  to redesign the Gibbs Pond Road and Lake Avenue South intersection, opposite the Nesconset Fire Department.

The town is hoping to move the intersection roughly 100 feet south of its current location, where motorist face a blind curve in the road.

The Nesconset Fire Department also asked town officials to have the intersection changed due to the difficulty in getting trucks out of the firehouse without an accident, according to Smithtown Planning Director Frank DeRubeis.

In July, the town officials has spoke about pursuing purchase of the property after an appraisal - and possibly eminent domain if negotiations failed.
