What Roads Are Plowed in Smithtown?

With the town being quiet on road updates, help us create a list for the community.

It's day two after a blizzard shrouded Smithtown in more than two feet, and one question continues ring out from frustrated locals: Where are the plows?

While Smithtown Patch was able to reach the town's public safety director John Valentine on Saturday, he was not able to give specific details on the state of the town's roads, and what is causing many neighborhood streets to go unplowed since Friday.

Multiple calls to town highway officials, meanwhile, went unanswered, and after 2 p.m. went straight to voicemail. The town also does not give updates on its websites, unlike nearby Brookhaven Town, which on Saturday opened a portal on its website where folks could report unplowed roads.

Officials in other towns have said the volume of snow, and the many abandoned cars on the major roadways, has slowed down plowing efforts.

Smithtown did post this message in its site at 6 p.m. on Saturday: "Town of Smithtown Highway and Parks Departments are working diligently to clear Smithtown roadways. Please be patient as there is a tremendous volume of snow to be removed from town roads. Please stay off town roads if at all possible."

In the interim, comments on this site and social media have overflowed, with many calling out the town for what they say is a poor response to the blizzard.

"Third Street in Saint James, Not touched since last night! Can't leave the house. Have about 18" in the road. I have lived here for over 50 years. This is the poorest response to the roads as my taxes go up! What is going on with the town? Still waiting for the stumps to be removed from Sandy. Who to you blame?," Rod Goble wrote.

At Patch, we'd like you to help us create a list of what's plowed and not plowed in town so far. Just add a comment below with the name of your street and whether it is plowed or not. Send this link to people you know so we can create a comprehensive list. We will be forwarding this link to the town, as well.

I attended a meeting (a postponed awards dinner) of fire service officials from the Town of Smithtown on Sunday night. The horror stories from all of these emergency workers town wide was eye opening. Town plows were pulled off the road by Jorgensen Friday night, leaving police, firefighters and ambulance crews to fend for themselves. Firetrucks, ambulances and police cars were getting stuck while trying top help people. It took the crew of one engine returning from a reported building fire 2 hours to return to their fire station...what should have been a 5 or 10 minute trip because there was no plowing taking place - even on firehouse streets. This is a debacle that Mr Jorgensen and Mr Vecchio must take responsibility for. Taking the plows off the road was a major error. Not having (enough) private vendors out plowing all night was a major error. We are well into Monday morning and all we get is bull from Town officials.

Two town plows just came down Annetta and turned on Summit towards Rhoda. Perhaps Vecchio meant by 5 PM today.
Bob R. February 11, 2013 at 04:00 pm
There you go someone else but me sees the LIGHT... This is ALL POLITICS and nothing more.. Jorgensen wants $$$$ for his roads and Vecchio WON"T give it to him.
These two won't play nice in the sand box and we are paying for it. Everyone of us!!!
L Marcus February 11, 2013 at 04:01 pm
Suggest that they go over to Town Hall and visit Vecchio to see what his latest bull is.

Monday, 11:15, Day 3: Our street, Robin Hill Lane in St. James, is still not plowed. Many plows have been driving past on Harbor Rd., but none have turned into Robin Hill Lane. Our driveway plower cannot even get down our street to plow our driveway.
Billie B February 11, 2013 at 04:23 pm
Plow has gone down our street at least 6 times and still going. Does not look any better now than before. Also, plow has tipped forward a couple of times.
You can see how poorly they are attached to these new trucks. What a waste of money.

Its Monday 11am and Shenandoh Blvd and all the number streets still never touched by plow
saint February 11, 2013 at 04:40 pm

I am a Nesconset resident. Both my husband and I were docked sick time today for not being able to physically get to work. Not only that, but I had to cancel numerous private clients and lost pay. Will the town reimburse me for this?? How do we explain this to our employers when your main home page is claiming all the roads are plowed and passable??
I called Smithtown Highway Dept and Dept of Safety this morning and was told that plows were in Nesconset. Well, that was 4 hours ago, and I still have not seen or heard a plow..... This is ridiculous!

Friday night the plow completely took out my new mail box which is now buried under the snow. I literally saw it happen. No idea why the bucket of the plow was a foot & a half over the curb line enough to knock it down. Does anyone know what dept in the town I call to report the damage??

When we come back from San Francisco during the holidays and in sumnmer our mailbox is usually trashed by vandals. This past summer the whole thing was gone. I requested that we put a new mailbox away from the curb but was refused so we had to pick up our mail at the post office. The "head" person in St. James looked at his routing and said that my house was listed as curb pickup even though many in my neighborhood and even next door have their boxes on their house. So when we get back this summer we will either pick up the mail at the post office or figure out a safer way. Glad you saw the plow on Friday. Cheers.

I was in parts of Brookhaven this morning (Centereach & Holbrook) and the roads and side streets were worse then Smithtown roads.I saw a couple of dead end streets that were not plowed out.
Karen Chisholm February 11, 2013 at 08:33 pm
Thanks to my neighbors with snow blowers Marion St in Nesconset was cleared enough for my husband to get to work. Still no town plow ! Heard intersection of Old Nichols and Smithtown Blvd not good. Heard there was plows in area have not seen one. Where were they on Friday ?
Jim Bennett February 11, 2013 at 09:15 pm
Old Nichols and Smithtown Blvd is fine. By the way, that intersection is the responsibility of the Suffolk County Highway Dept. All of the County roads have been fine for a while. It's Smithtown who fell down of the job.
Richard Riis February 11, 2013 at 09:23 pm
Remember when Smithtown had a reputation as having the best Highway Dept. & best-plowed roads? Not for a long time. Vecchio, time for you to go. 35 years on the job has made you lazy and unresponsive.
Megan Mc February 11, 2013 at 10:08 pm
While I agree this whole situation is disgraceful I have to point out the Mr. Jorgensen is out there personally lending a hand. My family was clearing the road from our corner house to the bigger plowed road. When a man in a Chevy with a plow drove by and did it for us. When we thanked him he introduced himself as Mr. Jorgensen. As he was leaving he talked to another guy in a regular truck with a plow and it sounded like whatever was plowed was done by them personally. So yes it is a town failure but atleast he was lending a hand.
Darla Shine February 11, 2013 at 10:52 pm
Where is Vecchio? Has anyone seen him in Smithtown since the storm started?
Marion Knott February 11, 2013 at 11:03 pm
OMG. He is probably lying under one of those un plowed roads.
John February 12, 2013 at 02:12 am
I had to plow our street sunday when the town dumptruck driver told me that he was told to "stay off the backstreets". He also said that the trucks were going out without sand which would have helped them by adding weight and traction.
I was out plowing privately all night friday and saturday and saw many Smithtown Highway dump trucks stuck in the snow and getting pulled out by heavy equipment. We're dealing with good hearted town drivers, trying to do their best, working 48 to 72 hours straight, and a useless superintendent and supervisor.
Ollie R February 12, 2013 at 06:12 am
Why was Glen Jorgensen personally plowing Addie Lane (a dead end) in Nesconset yesterday. Was it because County Legislator John Kennedy lives on that street. Politician taking care of politician while the taxpayers wait. Way to go Glen. Let the rest of us suffer until Monday.
Brad Milano February 12, 2013 at 12:06 pm
The plowing situation is no doubt ridiculous but if your crying political favors because of a Sunday night plow then that's sad. If his was clean Saturday morning I would say you had a legit beef but not Sunday.
weston mahalic February 12, 2013 at 02:27 pm
60 % of the trucks were down the night of the storm you should all be happy ur out today
Alan H. February 12, 2013 at 02:37 pm
Why should we be happy that 60% of the trucks were down? Don't you think it's a bit unacceptable that our equipment is so old or obsolete that it can't handle a major snowfall event?? Again - when property taxes are as high as they are, I think it's perfectly fine to have a high expectation of services. This is where "you get what you pay for" should actually WORK FOR US!
Gigi February 12, 2013 at 05:10 pm
Given the change in our weather the Town should be rethinking their approach to budgeting and purchasing equipment. It's only going to get worse. They should also be offering rebates to people who purchase snow removal equipment and standby generators....or at the very least not increase property taxes because homeowners install standby generators to ensure they will have power when the grid goes down (which it has at my house 3 times in the last 2 years with a cumulative total of 17 days in the dark & cold). This time around the I was told by LIPA that it is the fault of Long Island homeowners that we lose power because we don't maintain our trees properly. He further stated that LIPA only trims trees as a "courtesy" to homeowners but that it's really not their responsibility. As I said earlier on in this thread, we were lucky - our street was plowed early on and throughout the storm. Our problem was the loss of power for 22 hours. I can't blame all of you for being angry about being trapped on your blocks because the town has failed to remove the snow. I believe the Board (every single one of them) has been resting on their laurels for years. It's not just Vecchio, it's Creighton, Wehrheim, McCarthy and Malloy. They ALL need to go!!!
Marion Knott February 12, 2013 at 05:17 pm
I might be wrong but I think that LIPA has to make sure none of your or anyone's trees are on the power line. That is not a courtesy but a necessity. Check it out. Three Village schools are closed today. Brookhaven is a mess. I am here in spring like San Francisco but I feel your pain. Told the kids not to bother shoveling our drivewy. Just let Mother or Father Nature do it!
Carmelina February 12, 2013 at 11:29 pm

This should not be a problem getting passed. It is across from the hospital there is a nursing homeRead More near by. We need more nursing homes as there are no beds available for our aging population. If you want to stay here near your family as you age and need a nursing home in the future, let them build this. You do not want to go outside of Smithtown and live in nursing homes out of this area - trust me, they are not nice! It is a fact of life, we are all going to be there one day- at least have a say in it and have them build one for our future needs. They do not have much noise or activity- really. Plus they will bring jobs to our area.

Nick, North Country rd. is 25A. Northern Blvd. intersects 25A and runs all the way to Roseville.Read More Northern Blvd is a small street about 1 mile long that is one block over from smithtown HS East main entrance. It's a serious problem when most of the neighborhood walking to the HS will pass by this creeps house. It's a totally different Northern Blvd.
