Where Are Power Outages in Smithtown?

Let us know what streets are still without power.

More than one week after Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the East Coast and knocked out power for nearly 1 million Long Islanders, there are still thousands of Long Island Power Authority customers in the Smithtown area in the dark.

Patch is compiling a list of exactly what parts of the area are waiting for power. Use the comments section below to post the name of a street, business or intersection you know is still without electricity, and if you've heard from LIPA yet.

(For safety reasons, do not list specific addresses just street names and cross streets.)

More customers out this afternoon than this morning! Way to go LIPA and the powers that be! Maybe if the politicians were a little more "on hand" (like Christie in NJ) , morale would be up, odd n even would have been in place last week, and they wouldnt have to hide their faces. Why couldnt this have happened 1 month before the elections, UUUGGGHHHH!

6th street St. James. There 3 broken utility poles. I guess LIPA ran out of poles, they must be waiting for the sapplings to grow a little taller before they can be cut!

Dillmont Drive in Smithtown. My neighbor still has a live wire hanging in her driverway!! We have now taped it to the tree stump. From the tree the neighbors took down because this woman was blocked in her house since the tree covered her driveway. NO one has been on this block. NO one has really helped us. Briefly if that. Live wires and still no power!!!!!!!
JK November 8, 2012 at 11:51 pm

Hi, Pat Spencer, I am formerly of Smithtown and now live outside of Boston MA in Spencer! Granted, we ended up being on the fringe of this storm but we still had outages. We had our own weather debacle on Oct. 29 of last year with a snowstorm that left many of us without power for up to 10 days. The utility companies in New England were read the riot act this time around and informed that they needed to have a plan in place. This time, utility crews from other areas were brought into our region before the storm officially hit. We did not have to wait 17-24 hours for them to travel here after an outage, then scramble to find hotel accommodations. I saw a convoy of utility trucks with Indiana plates traveling in on the Mass Pike on Sunday, the day before Sandy arrived. Most areas were restored within 24-48 hours. We were thankful we missed the full impact, but the manpower was in place to get a jump on it if we did . Maybe LIPA will get its head out of its armpit next time and consider thinking ahead in a similar manner.

Friends on Cedar St in St James are still without power as are six of their eight neighbors. No new crews have been seen since the first two houses got their power back. Additionally, friends on Hillside Ave are also without any power. News from Governor Cuomo stating that LIPA is short on telephone poles only adds to the continuing outages. Calls have been made both to LIPA and Senator John Flanagan's offices.
Jeanne November 11, 2012 at 03:48 am
North side of Brook Lane connecting Maple and Brooksite had power for about an hour Sat evening. Got the call from LIPA asking to confirm power was restored but it went back out. Been out since 10/29.

You are absolutely right pj. Its comparing apples to oranges. Assisted living is for the elderlyRead More that cant take care of themselves. What noise is created. They are indoors and at the age where driving may not be an option. And the facility faces Route 25A. A main corridor that has been used as a main road for over 50 years. A road that has gas stations, bars, hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and high schools presently on it. Why not an assisted living.
P. J. Miller June 18, 2013 at 10:06 pm
Exactly. Don't see a problem having it. Many of them don't even go outdoors.
Lilly June 19, 2013 at 09:05 am
We have an assisted living center right next to our neighborhood. For the most part it is quiet,Read More there is not a lot more traffic, it even looks nice. I will take it over another strip mall, supermarket, bar any day . Like the previous poster wrote, it serves our community.
