Lipstick Application Tips & Tricks

Wear your lipstick confidently. Use these tips & tricks to ensure your lips stay fierce and sassy all night long!

Lipstick can be a fun way to make your lips stand out and your makeup really pop! However, when applied incorrectly (especially with darker colors) it can lead to feathering, smearing, stains on your teeth...etc. The topic of makeup and lipstick was brought up while I was out to dinner with a girlfriend recently. She explained to me that wearing lipstick has always been somewhat of a hassle for her because of the constant reapplying, the fear that it might come off onto her boyfriend when giving him a kiss, and how it seems to never look quite as good as it does on the Covergirl models.

No woman should be afraid to wear lipstick so here are my tips.

Lipstick Application Tips:

#1) Make sure your lips are well moisturized and exfoliated. Like your skin, your lips need plenty of moisture as well. They sell lip exfoliants at beauty supply stores or for a more wallet friendly version, you can make your own with a little bit of sugar and lip balm or use a soft toothbrush. Top them off with lip balm to ensure a smooth surface for your lipstick.

#2) Line your lips. Fill in your lips with the liner as well to form a base for the lipstick. *Some women prefer to skip this step.

#3) Apply Lipstick. Do this in a place where there is good lighting. Sometimes bathrooms don’t always have the best lighting, which can make a big difference in how your makeup turns out! If you can, bring a mirror with you and apply your makeup in front of a window where there is natural light. *Natural light is ALWAYS the best lighting!

#4) Complete the look with some translucent powder. This will help prevent feathering and keep your lipstick in place throughout the day/night.

Extra Tips & Tricks:

*After you apply your moisturizer, you can apply your primer and foundation to your lips or purchase Laura Geller’s Lip Spackle. Our lips all have a natural color to them (some more red, some more pink), and by putting on a skin tone shade over your lips, it will ensure that the true color of the lipstick to really come through. This will help prevent feathering as well!

*You can add gloss over your lipstick for a soft dewy look as opposed to a more matte one.

*As far as preventing lipstick from getting on your teeth, there’s nothing that beats the old finger in the mouth trick. After applying your lipstick, stick your index finger in between your lips (as if you had a straw in your mouth), and slowly drag your finger out. This will rid your lips of any excess lipstick that otherwise would have ended on you’re your teeth.

Hope this helps and encourages a few women to fearlessly wear lipstick!
