$1.4M in Aid Restored for Smithtown Schools in Final State Budget
With Assembly members expected to vote on a final state budget Thursday, Smithtown School District is expected to see a restoration of its high tax aid.
With state Assembly members poised to vote on a final budget on Thursday, state leaders announced school aid totals on Wednesday for the 2013-2014 budget year, restoring over $1.43 million to the Smithtown School District that had been cut in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposal.
A year-to-year reduction of roughly $630,000 overall, out of Smithtown's $38.3 million aid package, was originally floated by Cuomo, though the most painful cut of all came as a $1.35 million cut in high tax aid.
In recent weeks, Superintendent Anthony Annunziato has offered several different plans – even suggesting the possibility of bankruptcy – to get the school to financial sound footing next year in the face of a larger, $4.1 million deficit.
